It’s been a while since I blogged, but I figured I’d post about this since I discussed it with one of my mentees the other day.
When I first saw this, I kinda had a good laugh…but in reality, it’s quite serious. Facebook readers can view this here.
When I talk to the aspiring wedding photographers that I mentor, one of the things that usually comes up early in the season is how well I can endure 12+ hour days on my feet and stay excited and alert the entire time. The first few weddings of the year give me a good idea of how good of shape they are in. They’ll understand how demanding a days coverage is. It’s not easy.
I’m by no means a bodybuilder, but I think I’m in pretty good shape. I use to play tennis on a very competitive level, so I try to remember the benefits of maintaining a very healthy eating habit. I do get lots of exercise chasing Ethan and Brandon around at home every day ! Now that we’ve moved the family to an almost all organic diet, I can really feel the difference in the quality of food we consume. We all feel really good ! However, due to the nature of my work/life arrangement, I still average about 3-4 hours of sleep a night. I’ve been on that schedule for the last 3 years. Yet, I can still function quite well for these marathon weddings.
So, this is how I survive my marathon weddings with 4 hours sleep: two (2) Gatorades and a few granola bars. It’s the Gatorade drinks that really do it for me, though. My body responds really well to it. My trunk is full of them in two flavors. I have it at every wedding…even my destination weddings. I’ll exhaust all means to get my fix. Here’s a photo of me in Greece last fall for Michelle and Vince’s wedding. I swear by this stuff, and NO, I’m not sponsored by them (though I wish).

Anyways, back to the message of the video. It’s true what this video is warning you about. You can get fat. Long hours, lack of sleep, lots of editing, lots of facebooking and blogging, bad eating habits = a health risk.
Stay healthy and happy shooting.
